Basque cooperative expands student programme

Admin 9/8/2026

Mondragon Unibertsitatea, founded by the Mondragon Corporation in 1997, will continue to lead the EU4Dual dual training project – the European university alliance created to promote dual training – for a further two years.

The European Commission aims to scale up the initiative and strengthening its impact on European higher education by combining academic learning with practical, on-the-job training.

Students gain the skills and experience they need to start their careers, making it easier to move from education into work. Employers also benefit by gaining access to skilled, career-ready workers.

With over 11,500 students in campuses in the Basque region of Spain, Mondragon expects half of them to be enrolled in dual programmes by 2028 with support from a network of 900 corporate partners including Nokia, Sophia Genetics, Infineon Technologies, Hilty Szerszam and Dassault Systems.

Degrees include Undergraduate, Master’s and PhD courses in engineering, education, communications, business management, entrepreneurship and food science. The Basque-based organization says 26 percent of graduate students go on to work for the company where they completed their training.

The university is part of Mondragon, a federation of worker cooperatives based in the Basque region. Founded in the town of Mondragón in 1956 by Father José María Arizmendiarrieta and a group of his students, its first product was paraffin heaters.

Today it is the seventh-largest Spanish company in terms of asset turnover. In 2024, 70,000+ workers throughout the Basque area, the rest of Spain and internationally produced combined revenues of €11.213 billion.
